The successor to the Mark V is the USN Mark 12, featured here. This model elicits strong opinions and memories for many Navy divers during the 1980s and 1990s. After the Mark 12’s replacement, the US Navy unceremoniously decommissioned its inventory, selling the unusable helmets as surplus. Today, finding a Mark 12 in usable condition is difficult – finding one never put in the water is nearly impossible!

This helmet was sent to us by a retired US Navy diver. Here’s how the story was told to us; “as I was leaving the base for the last time my best friend and fellow diver put a heavy box in my car. When I got home I discovered they had given me this Mark 12 from the ship I served on last. He had picked out one that had never been used.” This Mark 12 remained in the retired divers’ care as a memento of his time in the Navy. Now, he has decided to let someone else care for and preserve one of the best Mark 12 known to exist.

This helmet was made by Morse Diving Equipment in January 1985. As you can see in the photos, the helmet is spectacular. From handling over nearly 4 decades the yellow paint does have a few minor imperfections and the acrylic windows show a little age. Amazingly the communications cable end is still wrapped up, the neoprene neck dam looks new, and the inside of the helmet is as nice or nicer than the outside. The only issue worth noting is that one of the safety pins is missing, which is obtainable occasionally, possibly from Morse today.

In 2021 we sold a beautiful Mark 12 helmet at auction for $6,350 plus shipping. In our opinion, this example is even better! The Mark 12 has proven to be an excellent investment over the last 5 years. Having the best example may cost more initially but will almost always be a very wise purchase.

All helmets sold by Nations Attic Inc. will have a certificate of authenticity (COA). This COA will have a serial # that matches the # on a tamperproof holographic decal placed on the inside of the helmet. This level of security and long-term assurance of the helmet’s authenticity is unmatched in the industry and very important to us.

The helmet will be shipped in via FedEx. Worldwide shipping is available. A shipping quote p can be provided by emailing your postal code.
