DESCO is one of the four original manufacturers of the famed Mark V helmet and continues to make them today. This beautiful example was made in 2009 on the historic date of September 11th. The helmet was shipped to the original buyer and never put in the water!
As can be seen in the photos, the helmet is virtually brand new in appearance. Many people do not realize that Mark V’s made for the US Navy required that they have a tinning covering the entire copper body. This tinning prevented saltwater corrosion. This tinning gives the helmet the semi-matt silver finish you see. The tinning is not applied to the brass hardware, such as the brails and window guards. This helmet is what a DESCO Mark V from World War 2 would have looked like new before being sent to the Navy.
Over the last fifteen years, the brass components on this Mark V have acquired a consistent rich patina on the surface. This patina could be left as is to darken over the years or easily be polished back to a brilliant shine. In addition to being in factory new condition, all of the original factory applied parts are present, which include the communications fitting cap, non-return valve with cap, internal air vents, internal reproducer (speaker) wired to comms fitting, brails, wing nuts, copper brail shims, safety latch, spitcock, and exhaust.
