This beautifully preserved 20th-century diving helmet was crafted by John Date of Montreal, Canada, the country's sole diving helmet manufacturer. Beginning in the 1850s, John Date produced some of the finest helmets in North America, and today, any surviving example is highly prized for its quality and rarity.

This particular helmet is a 12-bolt, three-light (window) model, bearing serial number 613 on the bonnet neck ring, breastplate neck ring, and faceplate frame—a complete set of matching numbers. This serial number places its production in the early to mid-1950s.

The helmet's copper body, lightly polished in the past, displays a rich golden hue, complemented by its well-preserved brass hardware. A clear wax coating protects this patina. The helmet retains all its original components, including four brails, twelve wing nuts, exhaust valve, glass lenses, side port guards, air and communications fittings, non-return valve, spring-loaded safety pin, internal air vents, exhaust chin button, and original cloth-covered communications wire. A small tear (approximately 1/4 inch) is present in the copper on the back of the bonnet, below the communications and air fittings. The bonnet also exhibits typical minor dents consistent with its working history.

“John Date helmets are always a thrill for us to handle. With a fantastic visual appearance and full serial #s matching, this helmet will be an impressive piece in any collection!”
