A.J. Morse & Son, a Boston company founded in the 1830s, produced some of the most iconic diving helmets, including the US Navy Mark V (1916-mid-1980s). Their diving equipment, renowned for nearly 200 years, established them as a leading name in the field. The company continues operations in Wisconsin.

This helmet's serial number is 3385, placing its manufacturer circa 1920s. This serial number is present on both the bonnet and breastplate neck rings. The serial number on the bonnet neck ring is difficult to read.

This helmet has received professional polishing, giving it a brilliant appearance. With light updated hand polishing, it will shine even more!

This helmet appears to have been undergoing restoration, but it did not quite get finished. Some components are missing: one stud, one wing nut, one rear brail, side port glass, safety latch parts, internal air vents, neck ring gasket, and exhaust chin button. The bonnet does thread on the breastplate but does feel a bit loose, possibly a neck ring gasket would help with this. Lastly, the backside side of the breastplate neck ring is pushed in slightly.

This helmet does visually present nicely, just as it is. If so desired, all the needed parts are obtainable.

Based on our assessment, this helmet was likely restored by Morse when located in Rockland, MA in the last 30 years. Numerous parts appear to be factory replacements. The serial number stamps are potentially a result of this restoration as well. While the helmet is authentic and visually appealing, Nation’s Attic will not issue a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for this example due to the restoration work performed on it.

If you are looking for a great-looking classic American helmet to display at an economical price and not concerned about all the pieces being the same age, this one should be considered.

The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one at a discounted price is available. The helmet will be shipped in two double thick specially prepared boxes via FedEx. Worldwide shipping is available.

The price includes a 4% credit card fee. If you pay by check, money order, or bank wire, the discounted price is $3,500 delivered within the contiguous United States.
