The US Navy Mark V diving helmet's enduring design and historical significance make it a prized possession among collectors globally. The Mark V served the US Navy from 1916 to the mid-1980s, and even after its official retirement, production continued for commercial and recreational use by companies like Morse, DESCO (Diving Equipment and Supply Co), and Schrader.

Schrader was involved in the initial design of the Mark V during World War 1 and continued producing the helmet for the US Navy till the end of World War 2. Today, the A. Schrader’s Son company continues to produce high-quality helmets and provides expert restoration work.

Dated September 1943, this helmet was made at the height of World War II production in the US. The brass ID plate is easy to read with serial #763B stamped on it. That same serial number is also found on the bottom side of all four brails and the bonnet communications cup making it a full serial #’s matching example! In addition, the communications cup features a US Navy inspection stamp. This stamp proves the helmet was in USN inventory during WWII.

This helmet remains in its original condition as found. The US Navy diver who owned and used it meticulously ensured all original components were present and in working order. This includes the original World War 2 reproducer within the bonnet, bearing the USN inspection stamp. A Schrader-stamped non-return valve is also present, likewise marked with the USN inspection stamp.

Following the veteran's passing, the helmet was stored for decades before its recent discovery. The surface exhibits minor cosmetic blemishes with random tiny spots of white paint. These can be removed with a gentle cleaning and patience.

This helmet does feature the original components, including:

  • Four brails (straps for securing the helmet) with serial #763B stamped on the underside of all four.
  • Twelve correct wing nuts – eight standard and four flanged.
  • Four copper brail shims
  • Spitcock valve (used to equalize pressure in the helmet)
  • BTE exhaust valve
  • Bonnet dumbbell safety latch with breastplate latch, chain, and cotter pin.
  • Glass windows with original red lead caulk
  • Window guards with all original brass screws intact
  • Air and communication elbow fittings
  • Air fitting non-return valve stamped Schrader with USN inspection stamp.
  • Air fitting brass cap
  • Communications fitting brass cap.
  • Original communications fitting internal comms hardware.
  • Internal air vents
  • WWII communications reproducer with USN inspection stamp (speaker)
  • Exhaust chin button

The only components missing are the neck ring and faceplate rubber gaskets, which are easily sourced from DESCO or Schrader.

This World War 2 Mark V helmet is a remarkable time capsule. It will be accompanied by copies of US Navy documents from its original owner, offering a glimpse into his naval career. Numerous photos showcase him wearing a Mark V helmet, serving on submarines and ships, and capturing moments of his life in the Navy.

Finding a WW2 Mark V helmet in such original complete serial # matching condition is exceedingly rare in 2025. The inclusion of the original owner's extensive historical information makes this a truly unique and invaluable piece, an opportunity we seldom have the privilege of presenting to our clients.

All helmets sold by Nations Attic Inc. will have a certificate of authenticity (COA). This COA will have a serial # on it that will match the # on a tamperproof holographic decal placed on the inside of the helmet. This level of security and long-term assurance of the helmet’s authenticity is unmatched in the industry and very important to us.

The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one at a discounted price is available. The helmet will be shipped in two double thick specially prepared boxes via FedEx. Worldwide shipping is available.
