Throughout the Mark V's production history, only four companies manufactured it. A.J. Morse & Son Company in Boston, Mass, was the original and primary supplier to the U.S. Navy. In the late 1930s, this company rebranded as Morse Diving Equipment Co. During World War II, Morse continued to produce the Mark V, but factors such as wartime material shortages and production priorities resulted in a limited output. This scarcity makes WWII-era Morse Mark V helmets highly sought after by collectors, ranking as the second most difficult to find, behind those manufactured by Miller Dunn.

This helmet was made on May 22nd, 1942. It is actually the 2nd earliest WW2 dated Morse Mark V we have ever handled. This information is on the oval brass ID plate along with its lot number. Unlike the other three manufacturers of the Mark V, Morse placed a lot number on the ID plate rather than a serial number. The helmet’s serial number is found on the two neck rings and brails. The serial number is 4135.

This Mark V helmet, nearly 83 years old, retains all original components and the authentic wear of a wartime artifact. Notably, it features remnants of yellow paint on the bonnet and breastplate. This indicates it was likely designated the "yellow diver," a practice used by the US Navy to distinguish divers working simultaneously. The original yellow paint is visible on the comms cup, above the ID plate, on the breastplate eyelets, and as faint traces on the ID plate itself. These surviving elements contribute significantly to the helmet's historical richness and original patina.

The copper body features a dark color with hints of the original tinning intact in some spots. All the brass hardware is in great condition, with a nice patina as well. The helmet’s ID plate is easy to read. Morse would stamp the serial number on the top side of all four brails. This helmet has all four matching brails stamped 4135. The front brails are stamped FRONT. The back brails are stamped BACK along with Morse Boston Made In USA.

On the inside of the helmet bonnet, the original air vents are present. The inside also retains the original tinning. The helmet is complete with all 12 wing nuts, four serial #ed brails,  window guards, red lead original sealed glass, air fitting, Morse exhaust valve, spitcock valve, dumbbell safety latch, and cotter pin with chain, air, and communications fittings, and a non-return valve with cap. The old rope on the breastplate is very old. The original neck ring gasket is long gone. Typical working dents for an early WW2-dated helmet are present, none being severe. The only flaw that is easily resolved are replacement Phillips head screws holding the two side window guards in.

The US Navy Mark V is arguably the gold standard of diving helmet collecting worldwide. This seldom found early WW2 Morse is a fantastic addition to any collection as well as being a solid investment piece.

All helmets sold by Nations Attic Inc. will have a certificate of authenticity (COA). This COA will have a serial # on it that will match the # on a tamperproof holographic decal placed on the inside of the helmet. This level of security and long-term assurance of the helmet’s authenticity is unmatched in the industry and very important to us.

The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one at a discounted price is available. The helmet will be shipped in two double thick specially prepared boxes via FedEx. Worldwide shipping is available.
