We are proud to present a seldom-seen A. Schrader's Son four-light twelve-bolt diving helmet. This particular example has led a fascinating life, starting as a U.S. Navy five-bolt helmet and later being modernized to a twelve-bolt interrupted thread helmet in the 1930s.
During the 19th century, the U.S. Navy utilized a variety of helmets from different manufacturers, including A.J. Morse & Son, A. Schrader's Son, and Siebe Gorman, with little standardization. It wasn't until 1916 that the Navy adopted the Mark V helmet as their standard. The 1916 manual also categorized earlier helmet models, designating the five-bolt helmet made by A. Schrader's Son as the Mark II and its threaded neck ring variant as the Mark IV.
As the 20th century progressed, many outdated Navy helmets were sold as surplus. During the Great Depression, these surplus helmets were often refurbished and used by commercial divers. This particular helmet underwent such a transformation in the 1930s. The large brass neck ring on the bonnet is a clear indication of its conversion from a five-bolt to a twelve-bolt helmet. The removal of the old communications fitting and recess cup, along with the absence of a replacement on the back, suggests the diver who used this helmet preferred a more traditional, hands-on approach to communicating with top side.
This helmet has aged gracefully since its 1930s conversion, retaining its original condition and attractive patina. Its serial number, 1339, dates back to this period. While the brails are missing, new ones can be made by the A. Schrader’s Company, who does incredible work.
The helmet has its original twelve wing nuts, glass, port guards, ID plate, exhaust, air fitting, internal air vents, and safety pin. The top of the bonnet exhibits typical light wear and dents, none of which are severe or compromising.
We are offering this exceptional piece of diving history at a very attractive price.
The display stand shown in the photos is available at a discounted price with the purchase of this helmet.
All helmets sold by Nations Attic Inc. will have a certificate of authenticity (COA). This COA will have a serial # on it that will match the # on a tamperproof holographic decal placed on the inside of the helmet. This level of security and long-term assurance of the helmet’s authenticity is unmatched in the industry and very important to us.
