US Navy Mark V Helmet - Dec. 1944 - DESCO!

On Friday December 1st of 1944 this Mark V helmet was sent to the United States Navy by the Diving Equipment & Salvage Company. From there the helmet was mostly likely used in the last year of the war and at some point sold as surplus to a commercial diver. During that time the helmet was kept in very nice condition and is now ready to be proudly displayed in your home or office. Like all our helmets, this US Navy Mark V is 100% authentic. In addition, this helmet does have a US Navy inspection stamp on the ID plate, verifying it was accepted into the Navy inventory during WWII. The helmet is complete and in excellent condition with only the most minor small working dents on the top. The serial # on the ID plate is 1929 with the # on the bonnet being 1939. It’s very probable the helmets were sent to the same Navy base or ship and while being used were mixed up. With the #’s being so close and made on the same day, it’s without a doubt this is what occurred. The US Navy Mark V is without a doubt the gold standard of antique diving helmet collecting. This classic example with a deep rich patina from World War 2 is the type that everyone wants. If this helmet could somehow relay stories about its adventures, it would be amazing. This wonderful example is complete with all the glass, guards, straps, wing nuts, hardware, etc. Please don’t hesitate to call, text or email about this helmet. View Video Of This Helmet!

WW2 Siebe Gorman Royal Navy Admiralty Diving Helmet!

This is a fantastic WW 2 era Siebe Goran antique diving helmet! This helmet is a 6 bolt 3 light, also known as the Admiralty Pattern model. These were popular during the 20th Century, especially with the Royal Navy. Speaking of the Royal Navy, this helmet appears to have been in their inventory! The famed "broad arrow" mark is on this helmet, just above the front window. This market was used to indicate inventory of the Royal Navy. On the top of the bonnet is a large painted number "27". More than likely this was applied while in military inventory. Lastly, the serial #s on this helmet date it to the 1940's time range. The serial numbers on the bonnet and breastplate do not match, but they are relatively close. The helmet itself is complete and original with the exception of the exhaust valve wheel. Other than this easy to install part, the helmet is complete with its & serial #s matching brails, wingnuts, glass, guards and internal vents. Inside the helmet still has speaker components and wiring intact. If you have thought about acquiring the equivalent to the US Navy Mark V, well here is your chance! View Video Of This Helmet Below! US Navy Mark V 80th Anniversary 1915-1995 Diving Helmet - Only 20 Made

The first year the Mark V was made for the US Navy was 1915. In 1995 for the 80th Anniversary of that historic diving milestone, the Diving Equipment & Supply Company made 20 very special Mark V’s. Each of the 20 helmets were individually numbered, with this one being the last one - #20! The helmets were offered to Historical Diving Society members in 1995 and quickly sold out. Since then we are not aware of any of these special Mark V’s re-entering the market. The helmet is 100% genuine and fully functional. Many people do not realize that when Mark V’s were made they looked just like this immaculate example. The copper body was fully tinned giving it a rich dark silver look. All the brass hardware was exposed giving the helmet a striking visual presence. While the detailed polishing probably wasn’t done for most standard production helmets, this example represents what a finely detailed example could be. This 80th Anniversary edition was detailed with custom fittings and commemorative tag. The tag is made of Sterling silver and reads: 80th Anniversary; 1915 - 1995; United States Navy Mark V; Limited Edition; DESCO; Historical Diving Society - USA. Below the special tag is the DESCO Mark V tag; which is stamped with the serial number and date it was made. Each of the four brails, neck rings and tag are stamped 20 of 20. Each of the brails also has a silver Mark V helmet decoration as well. The copper body was also double tin coated giving it an even more impressive and durable finish. This special Mark V will draw the attention of everyone in a room. If you have been looking for one that has a super clean appearance, limited production and with great investment value, this is a unique opportunity to own one. While this specific helmet has never been in the water, if you do plan on diving this helmet we would stress that it needs to be checked out by a certified dive shop first. The helmet is 21 years old now and made by hand. It does have some imperfection in the brass and copper that are minor and not visually distracting. Overall, a beautiful piece of American history and hand made art! Historic D-Day US Navy Mark V Diving Helmet 6-6-44 & Rare Bonnet!

One of our favorite jobs is discovering and studying vintage Mark V diving helmets we find. Almost all of them have a story to tell or via their small details, serial numbers, etc. We found this particular helmet in Colorado and got it into our shop to give it a gentle cleaning and inspection. Much to our surprise, we found not only one fascinating historical detail but two! After cleaning off all the dust we looked at the date on the original DESCO (Diving Equipment & Salvage Co) ID plate - 6-6-44, wow! This helmet was made on D-Day and then shipped to the Navy as part of a government order of 150 Mark V’s. When one thinks of historic WWII dates 12-7-41 comes up and then D-Day. After finding this special date the surprises were not over though! We proceeded to remove the bonnet and found a different serial number, #146. So why is this number special? To date, we are not aware of a earlier surviving DESCO helmet existing! This bonnet is one of the very first made and does exhibit some unique characteristics. The first initial run of Mark V’s made by DESCO actually used parts purchased from Morse. This helmet has a Morse front face plate and exhaust. In addition to that, the bonnet threads are not in the same location. On this helmet it only requires about a 1/16 turn to secure it to the breastplate, rather than the standard ⅛ turn. We did check with DESCO on this and they feel it was simply a bonnet that has a “rookie” mistake but was sent out anyway. Regardless, this bonnet is possibly the earliest example known current and it’s mated to a history D-Day breastplate - what a combination!  Overall the helmet is a wonderful untouched original example. It has a great patina and complete. All the straps, wing nuts, glass, communication fitting cap, non-return valve and other hardware are present. The DESCO ID plate has a clear serial number and date stamping. Only minor working dents on the top are present. There is evidence of green paint on the helmet in spots, probably on the helmet by accident. The neck ring does have a US Navy inspection stamp! If you have thought about acquiring a unique and impressive antique diving helmet for display and or investment, this one would made a great choice.
