1945 US Navy Mixed Gas Mark V - aka “The Widow Maker”

SOLD Video Below!

Earliest Mixed Gas Mark V We Have Found - US Navy Inspection Stamp Present!

Without a doubt among US helmets, the Mark V is by far the most popular among collectors around the world. Over the years we

have found a number of rare and unique examples of this famed helmet. Out of those, the most valuable and historical significant

Mark V type is the mixed gas or helium model. Many people are not even aware of is this model existence and it’s place in extreme

deep diving history. While the Mark V is an imposing and impressive helmet - the helium's are monsters! These historic Mark V's are

not only visually impressive - they have an amazing history behind their creation and use.

First used in actual practice in 1939 these mixed gas helmets were initially utilized for deep water rescue operations- specifically the

USS Squalus (SS-192). If you have never read about the USS Squalus and the rescue of the the crew and boat, then by all means

do! While many of the divers utilized the standard Mark V, some were equipped with then experimental mixed gas Mark V's. The

photo above actually shows a diver with a mixed gas Mark V during salvage operations of the USS Squalus. The photo is from

September 1939 on board the USS Falcon.

After the success of the USS Squalus salvage the Navy ordered (in limited numbers) a standardized "helium" Mark V for the rare

extreme deep water jobs. The helmet would go on revolutionize the way divers worked at depths of 500 feet and more. Into the

1950's the design was modified slightly by the US Navy. During the early 1960’s divers like Murray Black of DIVCON & Bob Kirby of

Associated Divers adapted and improved upon the technology to create their own successful helmets for extreme deep water divers

in the oil exploration business. The US Navy would continue to use the helium Mark V into the 1980's.

The large brass canister on the back of the helmet contained a chemical called Shell Natron which would help scrub Co2. However,

if any water came into contact with the Shell Natron, Chlorine gas was produced - severely injuring or killing the diver - hence the

name "widow maker" given to this helmet by some divers. These special Mark V helium helmets were very expensive to produce

and generally only the US Navy ordered them. Over the years the precious few of these we have found all dated to the 1970's with

one from 1959.

This full serial #'s matching helmet was made and inspected by the US Navy on 11-9-1945. This helmet was made by Diving

Equipment & Salvage Co (DESCO). The helmet is complete and serial #'s matching! DESCO actually placed the serial # on the ID

plate, inside & outside neck ring and the brass canister. In addition - the ID plate has a US Navy inspection stamp - showing it was

inspected and put into the US Navy inventory. All fitting caps are present and inside a speaker (reproducer) is present, also having

a Navy inspection stamp on it.

This special, historic and rare helmet will come with a detailed Certificate of Authenticity from Nation's Attic.

Just imagine the missions and depths of the ocean this helmet witnessed!
